International Team Of The Night: Arsenal Stars Shine For England; Real Madrid Ace Dominates For Germans

After the last international games for many European teams, we selected our best starting XI of the night. Arsenal and Real Madrid have the most players represented, while England and France are the most prominent nations after encouraging results.

Andreas Isaksson (Kasimpasa and SWEDEN)

France beat Sweden 1-0, but the visitors had Andreas Isaksson to thank for keeping the score down. The Kasimpasa goalkeeper made a string of saves to give the Swedish a chance – but unfortunately in vain.

Nathaniel Clyne (Southampton and ENGLAND)

England comprehensively defeated Scotland and Nathaniel Clyne enhanced his credentials for the second time in a week, defending well against pace and working well in partnership with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on the right.

Raphael Varane (Real Madrid and FRANCE)

Raphael Varane led France out as captain at just 21 years-old, and the Real Madrid demonstrated both his class at the back and his leadership, winning the game for his side with an excellent header.

Nicolas Otamendi (Valencia and ARGENTINA)

Argentina lost to Portugal with a last minute winner, but Nicolas Otamendi defended stoutly throughout, making five tackles and completing 90% of his passes. Unfortunate to end up on the losing side.

Layvin Kurzawa (AS Monaco and FRANCE)

Layvin Kurzawa has impressed for AS Monaco for the last two years, and earned the chance to prove himself a worthy successor to Patrice Evra at left back for France in this international break. Judging by his performance against Sweden, he’s more than taken the opportunity.

Jack Wilshere (Arsenal and ENGLAND)

Still acclimatising to his role as deep-lying playmaker for England, Jack Wilshere delivered an impressive performance against Scotland, regaining the ball and using it well. His personal highlight was a lofted through ball to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to open the scoring.

Toni Kroos (Real Madrid and GERMANY)

Toni Kroos was instrumental in the above statistic, helping Germany dominate possession away to the best possession team in football history. The Real Madrid man is arguably the best central midfielder in world football at present.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal and ENGLAND)

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain only received one pass from Jack Wilshere all game against Scotland, but it resulted in the winger firing home from his Arsenal club colleague’s perfect lobbed pass. Worked extremely well with Nathaniel Clyne on England’s right flank.

Antoine Griezmann (Atletico Madrid and FRANCE)

Despite the slim margin of victory, France displayed tremendous verve in attack, and much of their best forward play came through Antonio Griezmann. The Atleti man had seven shots, and assisted Raphael Varane for the only goal of the game.

Wayne Rooney (Manchester United and ENGLAND)

Wayne Rooney seems to have set upon breaking the England national side’s goalscoring record as quickly as possible. The Manchester United forward scored eight goals in an England shirt in 2014 – his most prolific year ever for his country.

Claudiu Keseru (Steaua Bucharest and ROMANIA)

Two goals for the Romania forward helped his country to a fine victory over Denmark. After a tricky start to international football, Keseru appears to be finding his feet at last.
