The 63-year-old believes that a member of Germany’s World Cup winning squad should win the top individual prize in football. He himself is on the shortlist for FIFA World Coach of the Year.

“It is more for the football world and outside world than for other things I believe. I think it will be Ronaldo or Messi but I want to say that you have to win something,” he said to the Red Devils’ official website.

“And the best thing to win is the World Cup so I hope it will be a German player because they deserve it. In Germany, the level of the Bundesliga matches is also very high so I think it should be a German player.”

Six Germans have been nominated for the award with Toni Kroos, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Manuel Neuer, Thomas Muller, Philipp Lahm, and Mario Gotze all on the shortlist.

Van Gaal also joked about being on the shortlist for Coach of the Year, “When you say the results of Manchester United it is unbelievable that I’m on the Coach of the Year shortlist.”

The Old Trafford club face Arsenal on Saturday in the 5.30pm kick off. Both sides will be looking to win to kick start their season. Neither team has impressed in the first eleven Premier League games, with defensive problems plaguing both managers.
