One of the big talking points will be Danny Welbeck’s first appearance against the Red Devils since completing a £16m transfer in the summer.

The England international is the 13th player to feature for both sides and here are the other 12 and which they were more successful for.

David Herd

Arsenal: 1954 to 1961 (166 appearances, 99 goals).

Manchester United: 1961 to 1968 (265 appearances, 145 goals).

Came through the ranks in North London before being snapped up by Matt Busby and winning the FA Cup and Division One title with United.

Ian Ure

Arsenal: 1963 to 1969 (202 appearances, two goals).

Manchester United: 1969 to 1971 (65 appearances, one goal).

Signed from Dundee, but was most famous for his shocking League Cup final display against Swindon Town and did little better at Old Trafford before moving back to Scotland with Motherwell.

George Graham

Arsenal: 1966 to 1972 (308 appearances, 77 goals).

Manchester United: 1972 to 1974 (46 appearances, two goals).

Won the league and cup double with the North London side in 1971 and would late manage to the club to glory as well, whilst his time at Man United was much less fruitful.

Jimmy Rimmer

Arsenal: 1974 to 1977 (146 appearances, 0 goals).

Manchester United: 1965 to 1974 (46 appearances, 0 goals).

The goalkeeper never really made it at the Theatre of Dreams, but after leaving for Highbury was named the club’s Player of the Year in his second season there.

Brian Kidd

Arsenal: 1974 to 1976 (90 appearances, 34 goals).

Manchester United: 1967 to 1974 (264 appearances, 70 goals).

Scored for the Red Devils in the European Cup victory over Benfica in 1968, but was also relegated with them six years later and then became top-scorer with the Gunners in his first season there.

Frank Stapleton

Arsenal: 1971 to 1981 (300 appearances, 108 goals).

Manchester United: 1981 to 1987 (288 appearances, 78 goals).

Won the FA Cup with the North Londoners, but pushed through a move to United to achieve more success (sound familiar?) and claimed two more cups after heading North.

Viv Anderson

Arsenal: 1984 to 1987 (150 appearances, 15 goals).

Manchester United: 1987 to 1991 (64 appearances, four goals).

Won the League Cup whilst at Highbury before taking the accolade of being Alex Ferguson’s first signing after taking over as Man United manager.

Jim Leighton

Arsenal: 1991 (0 appearances).

Manchester United: 1988 to 1991 (94 appearances, 0 goals).

Came with Ferguson from Aberdeen, but never truly established himself in England and a loan spell in the capital was even less fruitful with Leighton failing to make a single appearance.

David Platt

Arsenal: 1995 to 1998 (108 appearances, 15 goals).

Manchester United: 1982 to 1985 (0 appearances).

Signed his first professional contract at Old Trafford, but never played a senior game and then impressed at Juventus and Sampdoria before heading to London and winning the Premier League title in 1998.

Andy Cole

Arsenal: 1989 to 1992 (0 appearances).

Manchester United: 1995 to 2001 (195 appearances, 93 goals).

Other way round to Platt now, with Cole coming through the academy at Highbury before moving to Newcastle United and then winning three league titles and an historic treble whilst with Man United.

Mikael Silvestre

Arsenal: 2008 to 2010 (46 appearances, six goals).

Manchester United: 1999 to 2008 (361 appearances, 10 goals).

A squad player at the Theatre of Dreams the Frenchman still managed to win four league titles, the Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup before becoming the first transfer between Ferguson and Arsene Wenger.

Robin van Persie

Arsenal: 2004 to 2012 (279 appearances, 132 goals).

Manchester United: 2012 to present (59 appearances, 38 goals).

Controversially left the Emirates Stadium seeking glory after becoming captain under Wenger and although won his first league title straight after moving to United, van Persie alienated himself from Gooners forever.
