Louis van Gaal has already made a number of significant changes to the first-team squad at United, offloading some established names during the summer and spending big on some high-profile players.

These two targets for the club would continue that trend under the Dutch tactician, with the Bayern duo among the finest attacking midfield players in Europe and parts of a superb squad at the Allianz Arena.

One deal may be in the works for January and one for next summer, but if all goes according to plan, United could be set to add these two big names to their star-studded squad in the near future:

1) Xherdan Shaqiri

In a proposed swap deal involving United midfielder Ander Herrera, van Gaal could bring Swiss winger Xherdan Shaqiri to Old Trafford this January. The Spanish playmaker has not impressed van Gaal since his £30m move from Athletic Bilbao this summer, but is believed to be a top target for Pep Guardiola, while Shaqiri has not featured regularly in his side but could make a useful addition for the Red Devils.

2) Thomas Muller

Supposedly one of two main striker targets along with Paris Saint-Germain star Edinson Cavani, Thomas Muller could be brought to United next season as the club plan to offload current goal-getter Robin van Persie. The German international has been one of the best players for Bayern and his national side in the last few years and would make a world class addition at Old Trafford.
