Predictably, this is not the strangest thing to be thrown on to a football pitch from the stands. Here are ten items that have been thrown in the past by fans, with some of them being hard to understand just because of simple logistics…

10) Dani Alves banana incident

The Brazilian reacted brilliantly after a fan threw a banana at him in what was ruled a racist attack during Barcelona’s 3-2 win at Villarreal in April 2014. The 31-year-old picked up and ate the fruit, making a mockery of the person who threw it.

9) Red Wine

When Manchester United went one nil up against Arsenal in their Premier League match on the 22 November 2014, one Gooner threw some red wine at the Red Devils bench. The fan has since been arrested. Some are questioning who would drink red wine at a football ground?

8) A Wheelbarrow

During a Copa Libertadores match between America and Sao Caetano in 2004, things started to get heated between the teams. So fans reacted by throwing a wheelbarrow on the pitch. Who knows how they got it in, but it must be one of the odder items to travel to watch your team with.

7) Car Door

Not strictly thrown on to the pitch but unusual none the less, a pitch invader ran on to the pitch with a car door in the dying minutes of a match between New Zealand and Chile in 2002. No one knows why he chose to do this…

6) Tennis balls, tangerines, and tomatoes

Fans of Blackpool threw tennis balls, tangerines, and tomatoes on to the pitch last season in a show that surprisingly wasn’t inspired by their love of alliteration. The items were thrown in protest at owner Karl Oyston’s running of the club, and were inspired by a Swiss side which threw tennis balls on to the pitch after their game’s time was changed due to a Roger Federer match.

5) A beach ball

The infamous beach ball was thrown during a Premier League match between Liverpool and Sunderland in 2009. Ironically adorned with a Liverpool badge, when a Black Cats shot hit it it caused a deflection which meant that the actual match ball went in to the Reds goal. The North East club went on to win the game 1-0.

4) Leg of Lamb

After a late equaliser in a game between Ballymena United and Distillery of Northern Ireland in 2008, a leg of lamb was thrown on to the pitch. Thankfully no one picked it up and ate it off the ground.

3) Half a cat

In a pretty horrible scene during a match between Charlton Athletic and Ipswich Town in 1982, the front half of a dead cat was thrown towards the pitch. Its not known how it got there, but it did nearly hit a policeman on the way apparently.

2) A moped

In a Serie A match between Inter Milan and Atalanta in 2001 the Inter supporters stole a moped from the opposing fans, set it alight, and rolled it off the top pier of the stadium on to an empty section below. Pretty crazy even for Italian fans.

1) A pig’s head and a bottle of Jim Bean

Barcelona fans weren’t too happy when Luis Figo left to join rivals Real Madrid. On one of his returns to the Camp Nou in 2002 the Catalan club’s supporters threw many items at the Portuguese, including a pig’s head and a bottle of Jim Bean. This is pretty intense even for El Clasico.
