Arsenal and Dortmund have both disappointed this season, with both sides racked by injury and failing to living up to expectations. Both sides are packed with talent however, and this combined XI is pretty fearsome, despite the injuries.

GK) Roman Weidenfeller

Szczesny is a fantastic keeper but just loses out to Dortmund keeper Roman Weidenfeller, whose fantastic consistency wins him the spot over the occasionally flaky Pole. Excellent shot-stopper and a leader from the back.

RB) Lukasz Piszczek

The dangerous Dortmund fullback would take this spot even ahead of Arsenal’s starter Mathieu Debuchy, and faces little competition from Calum Chambers. Very strong going forward and no slouch defensively either.

CB) Per Mertesacker

The centre-back has not had the best start to the season, but is a quality player, and would perform better with this all-star lineup around him. The German is usually a commanding presence at the back.

CB) Neven Subotic

Greek defender Sokratis has been in great form over the last 12 months, but has a broken leg and will almost certainly miss out. Subotic is another quality defender, and will do well alongside Mertesacker.

LB) Kieran Gibbs

Talented young Dortmund full-back Erik Durm is unlucky to miss out, but Gibbs steals the spot because of his European experience. If Gibbs can stay injury-free, he can continue to develop into one of the best full-backs around.

CM) Ilkay Gundogan

12 months ago Aaron Ramsey would have walked into this spot, but his poor form in this season so far rules him out. Gundogan was being chased by some of Europe’s biggest clubs before his injury, and tomorrow night is a big test on his road to recovery.

CM) Sven Bender

Bender is a top class holding midfielder, and walks into the team ahead of the fading Mikel Arteta, who is starting to lack the mobility necessary to play as the deepest midfielder in a side.

AMC) Alexis Sanchez

Sanchez is in fantastic form and takes the number ten spot ahead of Shinji Kagawa, who is recovering from his spell at Manchester United, but has yet to reach the amazing heights he reached with the team before moving to England.

AMR) Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Is in red hot form this season, and his pace will be a real challenge for Arsenal’s back line. Quick and two-footed, the Gabon international can trouble even the best defenders.

AML) Henrik Mkhitaryan

Just beats Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to the right wing spot. A technically gifted winger with tricky dribbling style, the Armenian has a lot of pressure on his shoulders following the injury to Marco Reus.

ST) Danny Welbeck

Not the most brilliantly technical player around, but hard-working, clever and, this season so far, prolific.
