The Argentine’s goalscoring record has been prolific since first arriving at the Etihad Stadium back in 2011 and CaughtOffside has decided to see where the 26-year-old ranks among the best scorers in world football.

10. Daniel Sturridge, Liverpool

Although it was Luis Suarez that stole the headlines last season, Sturridge’s 21 goals played a big part in the Reds finishing second in the Premier League and since arriving at Anfield in January 2013 the England international has 37 strikes in just 52 games.

9. Radamel Falcao, Manchester United

It’s not known as yet just how much a cruciate ligament injury has affected this South American’s capabilities, but if he can rediscover the form that saw him score 155 goals in 199 games for AS Monaco, Atletico Madrid and FC Porto then it will be the Red Devils that benefit.

8. Karim Benzema, Real Madrid

Often overshadowed at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu by a certain Portuguese star, there is no doubt that Benzema plays a huge part in Madrid’s success with 124 goals for the club in 253 appearances since joining from Olympique Lyon back in 2009.

7. Diego Costa, Chelsea

Something of a late bloomer having only really risen to fame at the Vicente Calderon Stadium in the past two years, but 36 goals in all competitions for Atletic0 Madrid last campaign resulted in a £32m switch to the Blues and 11 in 14 to date.

6. Robert Lewandowski, Bayern Munich

Regularly at the top of the scoring charts in both the Bundesliga and Champions League for Borussia Dortmund, this Poland international completed a free transfer to the Allianz Arena over the summer and already has nine in 19 for Bayern.

5. Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paris Saint-Germain

At 33-years-old Ibrahimovic is the oldest on this list by quite some way, but over the years the Swede has proven his class in front of goal and no more so than with current club PSG – where the striker has 84 strikers in 102 games.

4. Luis Suarez, FC Barcelona

Over the past two seasons with the Reds this Uruguayan proved just how good he was at scoring – with 31 in 33 in 2013/14 a particular highlight – and it now remains to be seen if Suarez can recreate that form at the Nou Camp.

3. Sergio Aguero, Manchester City

The antics of the Argentina international on Tuesday just reaffirmed how good he is and Aguero now has a very impressive 92 goals in 140 matches for City in all competitions.

2. Cristiano Ronaldo, Real Madrid

Just as it is nigh on impossible to choose the next Ballon d’Or winner it is just as difficult in this list, with Ronaldo just edged into second spot despite having an unbelievable total of 277 goals in 264 games for Madrid since joining in 2009.

1. Lionel Messi, FC Barcelona

For having recently become the top-scorer in both La Liga and Champions League history despite still only being 27-years-old we give the top spot to Messi – although it is interchangeable with his rival – with the Argentinian having a career total to date of 415 goals.
