GK) Thibaut Courtois – 7

Had almost nothing to do, but kept his focus successfully.

DR) Branislav Ivanovic – 8

Defended well and should have scored with a stunningly struck volley, which flew mere inches over the crossbar.

DC) John Terry – 8

Opened the scoring with a great, towering header, and did not let up as the game went on.

DC) Gary Cahill – 7.5

Made one small mistake in the first half but was largely flawless, and kept Klaas-Jan Huntelaar quiet throughout.

DL) Cesar Azpilicueta – 7

The impassable Spaniard always looks better when Chelsea are on the defensive, but did not put a foot wrong at the back.

DM) Nemanja Matic 7.5

Cut the supply from Schalke’s midfield to Huntelaar successfully, and pressed the German side all over the pitch

CM) Cesc Fabregas – 7

An unusually quiet performance from the Spanish midfielder, who simply sat back and controlled the tempo.

AM) Oscar – 8

The Brazilian is really playing at his best at the moment, and was heavily involved in much of Chelsea’s devastating attacking play.

AML) Eden Hazard – 7.5

Was slightly overshadowed by his supporting cast tonight, which will be a welcome break for the Belgian, who has carried the Blues in attack on occasion this season.

AMR) Willian – 9

One of his best games for the club. Created two goals and finished one, and finally carried the attacking threat that he needs to produce more often.

ST) Diego Costa – 7

Didn’t get his goal but lead the line with his customary muscularity.

SUB) Didier Drogba – 8

The Ivorian came on as a sub to replace the tiring Costa and did spectacularly, tapping home from Willian’s assist and then crossing neatly to fellow sub Ramires.
