Arsenal have apparently joined Chelsea in their pursuit of Real Madrid centre-back Raphael Varane as he continues to struggle to break into the side ahead of Pepe and Sergio Ramos, according to the Daily Star.

Varane’s former manager Jose Mourinho was thought to be leading the chase to land his signature, whilst Manchester United are also believed to be interested in making a move of their own.

However, Arsene Wenger’s determination to strengthen his defence in January has seen the Frenchman look at his compatriot.

Reports close to the Spanish capital are suggesting that the 21-year-old could be available for as little as £19m, whilst others have claimed that Ancelotti will only entertain bids closer to the £30m mark.

Varane himself has hinted that he is not entirely happy at the club, fuelling the speculation that he could be on the move in the new year.

“It’s different with the national team. I get more minutes and have more responsibility in the team,” he said.

“The aim is to reach the same level of involvement in the club.”
