Recent reports suggest that Arsene Wenger is stepping up his interest in two main transfer targets for this winter, with two players worth a combined £24m strongly linked with moves to the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners ideally need a signing at centre-back and defensive midfield this January, and it may now be that they will land two excellent candidates on the cheap in a smart piece of business in the transfer market.

According to recent reports, the two players are as follows:

1) James McCarthy (Everton)

First on Arsenal’s agenda is superb Everton midfielder James McCarthy, who has been identified by the club as the ideal player to fit into their system and play that deep-lying midfield role. With Mikel Arteta and Jack Wilshere currently out injured, the Republic of Ireland international looks like a player who could be a like-for-like replacement in that role, with great defensive ability and work rate as well as quality and intelligence on the ball. The 24-year-old would cost around £16m, which could potentially be a bargain for the Gunners.

2) Ron Vlaar (Aston Villa)

Secondly, Arsenal could solve their problems in defence with the £8m signing of Aston Villa’s Ron Vlaar, who is likely to move on the cheap this January as the club look to avoid losing him on a free transfer next summer. Manchester United are also interested in the solid Dutchman, who looks ready to make the step up to a bigger club.
