The Ghanaian is currently on loan at fellow Premier League club Everton, but has struggled for playing time there.

This has led to the Blues’ hierarchy thinking about recalling him in January. A subsequent loan to the Black Cats would be beneficial as he would be far more likely to play there.

The North East team drew with Chelsea at the weekend, and will be looking to improve their side mid-season in order to continue their fight against relegation.

They are currently three points clear of the bottom three after 13 games. It would be a great success for manager Gus Poyet if they were to stay in the division another year.

The last Ghanaian signed by Poyet’s side was Asamoah Gyan, who bizarrely left the club to join UAE side Al Ain in September 2011.

They will be hoping that Atsu is more willing to play for the team were he to arrive in the next transfer window.
