The latest rumours link the Gunners with a £16m move for Everton’s Republic of Ireland midfielder James McCarthy, with the 24-year-old believed to be ready-made for their team. However, he’s far from the only option.

With Arsenal having recently lost both Mikel Arteta and Jack Wilshere to potentially long-term injuries, CaughtOffside analyses six potential candidates for Wenger to chase in the New Year.

6) Grzegorz Krychowiak (Sevilla)

Poland international who joined the Spanish side this summer from Reims in France. Despite his summer switch, rumours of the 24-year-old potential move to Arsenal have continued to circle, although you have to think Sevilla would demand a hefty price.

5) Tolgay Arslan (Hamburg)

Another 24-year-old capped at youth team level by both Turkey and Germany, but yet to earn a call-up to either first team. Has been with Hamburg since 2009, following a youth team career at Borussia Dortmund. Arsenal are tracking his progress according to reports.

4) Moussa Sissoko (Newcastle United)

A midfielder of proven Premier League quality, the Frenchman has arguably Newcastle’s stand-out player since he joined the club in January 2013, scoring seven goals in 59 league games. The 25-year-old is a full international, and could be available for around £15m.

3) James McCarthy (Everton)

Reports in the Daily Mail claim that Arsenal are willing to open the bidding for the Everton midfielder at £16m. McCarthy only joined the Toffees in a £13m switch from Wigan in the summer of 2013, but has continually caught the eye with the way he has marshalled their midfield alongside Gareth Barry and maintained a high level of consistency.

2) Yohan Cabaye (PSG)

The Daily Express reported recently that Arsenal are the favourites to sign the former Newcastle midfielder, who has struggled to establish himself in the PSG first team. Manchester United and Liverpool are also interested, but Wenger is keen to secure Cabaye’s signature, and is reportedly willing to meet the £19m asking price.

1) Christoph Kramer (Borussia Monchengladbach / Bayer Leverkusen)

The German World Cup winner is currently on loan at Gladbach, where he has been since the summer of 2013. He’s actually yet to play a game for his parent club, and they could risk losing him after his stunning rise. The 23-year-old could be available for as little as £12m.
