The Germany international has been at the Emirates Stadium for two-and-a-half years after signing from the German side, but has admitted that he would like to return there for his third spell.

“I can imagine a transfer to Cologne in the next few years because I’m always attached to the club,” Podolski was quoted by the Daily Star.

Although the 29-year-old does not say this move will be immediate, the lack of first team football currently available to the attacker in North London makes the switch likely to be sooner rather than later.

Podolski has started just one match for the Gunners all season, which came in the Capital One Cup defeat to Southampton towards the start of the campaign.

Manager Arsene Wenger prefers the likes of Santi Cazorla and new signings Alexis Sanchez and Danny Welbeck ahead of the German and the player has admitted he needs more game time or else he will have to leave the Emirates.

Since joining the North Londoners Podolski has played 78 times in all competitions and scored 29 goals.
