Arsenal have been linked with a number of central midfielders in the run up to the January transfer window, and we’ve decided to rank them in the order in which we believe the Gunners should be trying to sign them.

6) William Carvalho – Sporting Lisbon (The Mirror)

We don’t get this one. Carvalho is a promising player, but he doesn’t start for his country, and is worth nowhere near the £36.5m fee which keeps being mooted. Arsenal should save that kind of money for already proven world-class players such as Alexis Sanchez.

5) Moussa Sissoko – Newcastle United (The Daily Mail)

Potentially brilliant, woefully inconsistent. Sissoko provides an outstanding box-to-box presence when he’s on his game, but as Newcastle fans will tell you – they see it all too rarely. Also isn’t a naturally defensive player, which is what Arsenal need.

4) Yohan Cabaye – PSG (The Metro

Cabaye is tremendously talented, but we’re ranking him low because he’s the last thing Arsenal need right now. He’s too similar to Arteta, Ramsey and Wilshere – and concentrates more on creating than destroying.

3) Grzegorz Krychowiak – Sevilla (The Mirror)

The Pole is enjoying a superb season with Sevilla, but as a result, he’d be very expensive. He is exactly what Arsenal need though in terms of his discipline and defensive contribution in the centre.

2) Christoph Kramer – Bayer Leverkusen (The Daily Star

The World Cup winning German is rated at £20m, but because he’s on loan at Borussia Monchengladbach, Arsenal would probably have to wait until the summer to sign him. He’s combative, 23-years-old, and showing the potential to develop into one of the best defensive midfielders in Europe.

1) Sami Khedira – Real Madrid (The Daily Star)

Rumours are rife that Bayern Munich have already reached an agreement with the German, but if they haven’t his signing would be a complete no-brainer for Arsenal. A number of his international teammates are already in the squad, and he’d cost very little in January because his contract is up next summer. His wages would be huge, but this is a player who’s won both the Champions League and the World Cup in 2014.
