The Red Devils are being tipped to continue this new aggressive approach to making signings, with van Gaal setting his sights on four main targets, mostly in the defensive positions, as the club look to continue growing and aiming to get back among the top four.

So far, United’s big-name signings of this summer have had mixed success, with Angel Di Maria, Daley Blind and Ander Herrera faring well, while Radamel Falcao and Luke Shaw have perhaps been disappointing. Still, there is plenty for the fans at Old Trafford to be excited about by these four big names on the club’s shopping list.

1) Diego Godin (Atletico Madrid)

A player who has impressed greatly in La Liga, Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin is among the club’s top targets to come in and bolster their options at the back.

2) Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund)

Another superb centre-back, Borussia Dortmund star Mats Hummels is being targeted by van Gaal in what could potentially be an entirely new-look back four next season.

3) Kevin Strootman (AS Roma)

Another exciting addition in midfield, it could be that United will finally land long-term target Kevin Strootman from AS Roma, with the Dutch playmaker known to be a favourite of van Gaal’s and one he has worked with before during his time in charge of the Netherlands.

4) Nathaniel Clyne (Southampton)

One of the most improved players in the Premier League this season, Southampton right-back Nathaniel Clyne is also on United’s radar after some superb performances that have also seen him called up for England this term.
