Van Gaal spent over £150m on new additions over the summer but will have massive funds available to continue his re-building of the squad he inherited from former boss David Moyes.

Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund)

The rock solid German would certainly help boost Man United’s defence and the fact that his Westfalenstadion side have started the season so poorly could well help van Gaal in his pursuit of the 25 year old centre-back.

Diego Godin (Atletico Madrid)

Dependable Uruguayan could be a cheaper central defensive option than Hummels and a high-profile move to Old Trafford could tempt the 28 year old after five seasons at the Vicente Calderon.

Dani Alves (Barcelona)

Brazilian may be available ‘on the cheap in January as his Nou Camp contract expires next summer and the experienced south American would be a big improvement on van Gaal’s current right-back options.

Kevin Strootman (AS Roma)

Dutch midfield general has long been a Man United target and is now back from his long term injury lay-off and a move from Louis van Gaal for his former national team charge seems very likely indeed.

Arjen Robben (Bayern Munich)

The last of the five targets named by the Metro and arguably the trickiest one to pull off.

The Dutch winger has experienced a huge level of success since moving to Bayern Munich in 2009 and it seems highly unlikely he would be looking to leave the Allianz Arena any time soon.
