Carrick recently returned to action after being sidelined with an ankle injury, and has added some much needed stability to a United side that has seen a number of ups and downs so far this season.

The veteran’s current deal comes to an end next summer, but the Dutch boss clearly believes he still has plenty to offer the club.

Despite spending £153m already this summer, United are preparing to splash the cash yet again in January. Van Gaal will surely be looking to bolster his side’s defence, with the Red Devils forced to field a number of youth players at different times this season.

Carrick’s return to the field has coincided with a dramatic return to form for the club, with United winning their last four on the trot; clearly a player that the manager thinks very highly of.
