Some have been with a number of Europe’s top clubs, and are now plugging away until the time comes to give it up. You’ll likely remember every name here, and in some cases you may be surprised to learn that they are indeed still playing.

Walter Samuel – FC Basel

The former Argentine international is now 36, and after leaving Inter Milan this summer he penned a deal to join Swiss giants FC Basel. However, he has only managed to make a handful of appearances for the club, one of which came against Real Madrid in the Champions League.

Alex Manninger – FC Augsburg

The 37-year-old former Arsenal and Juventus stopper is now plying his trade Germany with Augsburg, who he joined back in 2012. Despite his advancing years he is still the club’s first choice stopper and is showing no signs of hanging his gloves up just yet.

Deon Burton – Scunthorpe United

A former World Cup participant with Jamaica in 1998, the 38-year-old has not sampled the highs of the Premier League to see out his twilight years with Scunthorpe. Since making his debut back in 1994, Burton has wracked up 17 clubs during a long and colourful career.

Anders Svensson – Elfsborg

Back in 2001, the former Swedish international joined Southampton and promptly made himself a hiton the south coast for the next four years. Now back at his first club, Elfsborg, he is still a regular fixture in the first team at the ripe old age of 38.

Juan Pablo Angel – Atletico Nacional

The former Aston Villa ace is now back in his native Colombia with Atletico Nacional, where he is still banging in the goals despite being a grand old age of 39. He briefly retired after his MLS adventure ended in 2012, but was quickly coaxed out of his decision to turn out for Nacional once again.

Juan Carlos Valeron – Las Palmas

Once one of Europe’s most enigmatic talents and a regular Spanish international, the 39-year-old joined Las Palmas in Spain’s second tier upon leaving Deportivo back in 2013.

Cuauhtemoc Blanco – Puebla

The Mexican maestro has undoubtedly become one of the legends of Central American football over a distinguished 22-year career. Now 41, he is still playing regularly with Mexican outfit Puebla, and despite his old legs is not disgracing himself either.
