Another weekend of Premier League action has drawn to a close, save for Monday night’s huge clash between Southampton and Manchester United, and we are now very much entering into the hectic festive period of back-to-back football.

The big stories of the weekend involving the big boys slipping up – but who capitalised and impressed? This is our Premier League team of the weekend:

GK) Hugo Lloris (Tottenham Hotspur)

There was plenty of competition for the goalkeeping position this week, with Rob Green and Allan McGregor also impressing, but it was only through the saves of the impressive Hugo Lloris that Spurs held on for a draw at home to Crystal Palace.

RB) Daryl Janmaat (Newcastle United)

Newcastle put in an all-round exceptional team performance as they became the first side to defeat Chelsea this season, but right back Daryl Janmaat was one of the best players on the pitch, contributing impressive both in defence and attack.

CB) John O’Shea (Sunderland)

Sunderland have largely been excellent defensively this season, one notable aberration at Southampton aside, and that continued as O’Shea led them to a clean sheet at Anfield.

CB) Joleon Lescott (West Bromwich Albion)

Lescott’s ability to stay fit could be crucial to West Brom’s hopes of avoiding the drop under Alan Irvine this season – the former England international was superb at the KC Stadium as the Baggies ground out a 0-0 draw.

LB) Alberto Moreno (Liverpool)

Came back into the side and put in an impressive display with some raiding runs down the left hand side – was unlucky that his teammates were not able to make more of his service.

RM) Bojan Krkic (Stoke City)

He took his time, but former Barcelona man Bojan has burst into life at Stoke City in a more creative, deeper role – he caused havoc in the Arsenal defence by ghosting into absent spaces and running at defenders.

CM) Yaya Toure (Manchester City)

Toure is enjoying something of a renaissance in recent weeks and he was the best player on the pitch as City saw off Everton at the Etihad Stadium, slotting home the winning penalty for good measure.

CM) Lucas Leiva (Liverpool)

That Lucas was forced to put in such an all-action, destructive display at home against Sunderland should be of concern to Liverpool, but the Brazilian was excellent nonetheless.

LM) Wilfried Zaha (Crystal Palace)

Is starting to refind his feet and his form since returning to Crystal Palace on loan from Manchester United – his pace and trickery caused real problems for Spurs and he was unlucky not to score.

ACM) Moussa Sissoko (Newcastle United)

Has been one of the players of the season so far in the Premier League and continued to show that form as Newcastle beat Chelsea at St. James’ Park – did an exceptional job defensively and was also a constant threat on the counter attack.

SC) Andy Carroll (West Ham United)

Carroll’s return to form has meant that West Ham have not missed Diafra Sakho and Enner Valencia as much as they might have done – he dominated Swansea physically and scored two fantastic headers.
