Here is an XI of the worst culprits.

GK – Tim Howard, Everton

Heralded as one of the best goalkeepers in the division and at the 2014 World Cup, but now the USA international looks like a complete liability.

RB – Bacary Sagna, Manchester City

First choice at Arsenal last term and thought of as one of the best right-backs in the country, now can barely get a game at City.

CB – Per Mertesacker, Arsenal

Was initially accused of being too slow and cumbersome when he first arrived at the Emirates Stadium, but received plenty of praise last year. It’s back to the former now.

CB – Dejan Lovren, Liverpool

Credited with making Southampton a defensive behemoth in 2013/14, but since leaving for Anfield in a £20m deal perhaps it was Jose Fonte doing all the work after all.

LB – Glen Johnson, Liverpool

Could never defend, but that didn’t matter because the England international was great going forward. Johnson can’t do that now either.

CDM – Gareth Barry, Everton

Looked to have revitalised his career whilst on-loan from the Citizens, so Roberto Martinez signed the 33-year-old permanently and now he looks woeful once again.

CM – Aaron Ramsey, Arsenal

Being named as one of the best midfielders in Europe 12 months ago and now can barely dub himself as a poor man’s Jack Wilshere.

CM – Steven Gerrard, Liverpool

Captain fantastic last season and nearly steered the Reds to the title, but now looks more reminiscent of that slip against Chelsea in each game he plays.

RW – Adnan Januzaj, Manchester United

Billed as the best young player in the world after scoring a debut brace against Sunderland – now the 19-year-old is an unknown figure at Old Trafford.

ST – Rickie Lambert, Liverpool

One of an elite few to score and assist more than 10 league goals last campaign, now five of one or the other would be a miracle.

LW – Marko Arnautovic, Stoke City

Friend of Mario Balotelli and considered a great coup for the Potters, but 12 months on the 25-year-old is about as effective as his Italian counterpart.
