Rodgers is looking for a replacement for Glen Johnson – who is out of contract next summer – and has identified this Uruguay international.

However, the Portuguese champions have told the Northern Irishman it will cost £4m to sign the 30-year-old – who is also a free transfer next summer, according to the Mirror.

Pereira is also wanted by Turkish pair Besiktas and Trabzonspor and FC Barcelona defender Martin Montoya could be an alternative.

Premier League clubs to be snubbed by Palermo starlet Paulo Dybala

The Argentine has been grabbing plenty of attention this term for his impressive performances in Serie A and several English clubs are on his trail.

According to the Daily Star Arsenal, Manchester United and the Reds are all interested, but Dybala is ready to snub a £31m move and sign a new contract with his current club.

“With the director and with Zamparini we are talking about renewal, I think it will come to an agreement,” the 21-year-old said.

Danny Murphy says his former club would never appoint Andre Villas-Boas as manager

With the future of Rodgers at Anfield in doubt after a poor start to the season there are already rumours that the 41-year-old will be sacked and replaced.

“It’s ridiculous. He failed at Chelsea, he failed at Tottenham. Why would you take him at Liverpool?” the ex-Fulham man was quoted by the London Evening Standard.
