Hull goalkeeper Allan McGregor was the hero once again for the Tigers on Saturday as he got down low to beat away Graham Dorrans’ penalty kick in a 0-0 draw with West Brom.
The Scotland international has been in inspired form saving his last three penalty kicks for Steve Bruce’s side with stops against QPR’s Charlie Austion and Manchester City’s Frank Lampard.
But where does McGregor stand in comparison to the rest of the Premier League era’s goalkeepers? CaughtOffside takes a look at the top 10 penalty savers, list sourced from here.
6th=) David Seaman – Penalty Saves: 7
Arguably Arsenal’s greatest goalkeeper, though they’ve had a few, Seaman’s penalty saving heroics have been witnessed multiple times over his playing career most notably against Millwall in the 1993 League Cup final when he produced three wonderful stops to win Arsenal the cup.
6th=) Robert Green – Penalty Saves: 7
Perhaps best remembered for his error against the USA four years ago, Green has an unfortunate reputation for the calamitous but on more than one occasion has shown himself to be a competent and reliable goalkeeper, such as at QPR this seeason
6th=) Tim Howard – Penalty Saves: 7
Howard actually started in his youth as a striker but was coerced into becoming a goalkeeper due to his height and strength.
Was sidelined at Manchester United for the more experienced Edwin van der Sar but has found success at Everton where he is one of the first names on the team sheet.
5th) Edwin van der Sar – Penalty Saves: 8
Despite joining Manchester United in 2005 and going on to win numerous accolades and medals whilst between the sticks, van der Sar only made one penalty save at the Red Devils, his previous seven coming at old club Fulham.
4th=) Jussi Jaaskelainen – Penalty Saves: 9
Despite looking worse for wear in recent season Jaaskelainen has some serious pedigree when it comes to penalty saves – his miraculous two penalty saves in one match whilst at Bolton in 2006 is still a fan favourite.
4th=) Shay Given – Penalty Saves: 9
Given has built a career on miraculous saves and ridiculous reactionary stops. Has had a torrid time since his move to Aston Villa, the Irishman had to go on loan to Middlesborough last season to get game time and has admitted he may have to permanently leave the West Midlands side to play as much as he’d like.
3rd=) Mark Schwarzer – Penalty Saves: 10
He may now be 3rd choice at Chelsea but Mark Schwarzer built a reputation as a reliable and robust goalkeeper during his five years at Fulham and eleven at Middlesborough.
He may be 42 and not playing regularly but the Australian’s reputation certainly precedes him as he’s the target of a potential emergency loan deal at Newcastle.
3rd=) Brad Friedel – Penalty Saves: 10
The veteran goalkeeper claims to have built a foolproof way of determine what kind of penalty he is going to face, which may explain his 10 penalty saves throughout his time in the Premier League.
2nd) Thomas Sorensen – Penalty Saves: 11
The Dane just misses out on top spot with 12 spot kicks saved during his 15 and a half year spell in the Premier League.
He’s certainly been on the move in the League with five penalty saves at Stoke City, four at Sunderland and three whilst at Aston Villa.
1st) David James – Penalty Saves 12
The former England no. 1’s position at the top of the pile should come as no surprise after his 18 years in the Premier League with a variety of clubs.
James’ time at Liverpool, Manchester City and Portsmouth saw him save 13 spot kicks. He now competes in the Indian Super League for Kerala Blasters FC as a player and manager.
