Portugese club Benfica have released footage to announce the opening of their new, cutting edge training facility that wouldn’t go amiss in FIFA.

Players stand in a four sided box with an artificial pitch base and have to react as balls a fired at them automatically – the player is then expected to control and then hit a target which appears randomly on the walls in various shapes and sizes.

The system can even recycle the balls with an automated ‘ball-boy’ feature so doesn’t need any interaction except for the on and off buttons.

The training system is intended to analyse and improve players reactions whilst improving their accuracy when offloading the ball at quick speeds.

It can record and collect data on player reaction times whilst also be used to aid in injury prevention and player positioning during a game.

The technology isn’t the first of its kind, however, with Borussia Dortmund and Hoffenheim both using similar technology with their ‘Footbonaut’ training systems released in the last year.

Will we see something similar in the coming years in England?
