The Telegraph has published a list of the ten most mentioned Premier League footballers on Twitter this calendar year.

(Data accurate as of 01/12/14)

10) Sergio Aguero – Manchester City

Aguero’s taken the Premier League by storm this year, and is rated by many as the best player in the competition. He recently picked up an injury however which will keep him out for eight weeks.

9) Cesc Fabregas – Chelsea (Previously Barcelona)

Twitter went crazy when the former Arsenal man agreed to a £27m transfer from Barcelona to Chelsea, which has transformed Jose Mourinho’s Blues into title favourites.

8) Robin van Persie – Manchester United

RVP’s most memorable moment of 2014 was his goal against Spain for Holland in the World Cup, which has made the final shortlist for the Puskas award – given to the best goal scored in world football over the space of the year.

7) David Luiz – PSG (Previously Chelsea)

The Brazilian’s shocking performance against Germany in the World Cup semifinals led to scorn, which was maximised considering PSG had made him the world’s most expensive defender only a month earlier.

6) Mario Balotelli – Liverpool (Previously AC Milan)

Balotelli’s awful start to life with Liverpool has seen him mocked on Twitter, and an Instagram post which many alleged to be racist led him to be the subject of thousands of tweets as well.

5) Mesut Ozil – Arsenal

Ozil won the World Cup with the Germans, but has barely featured for Arsenal this season because of a knee injury, and it’s perhaps a surprise to see him so high.

4) Alexis Sanchez – Arsenal (Previously Barcelona)

Sanchez signed for Arsenal for £35m, and has hit the ground running in North London, leading to worldwide plaudits on social media.

3) Radamel Falcao – Manchester United (Previously AS Monaco)

Falcao’s deadline day loan transfer to Old Trafford set Twitter into meltdown! The Colombian is one of the world’s best players, but injuries have restricted his start to life in England.

2) Wayne Rooney – Manchester United

Rooney finally scored a World Cup goal in 2014, and has been superb for United this term, having been given the captaincy by new manager Louis van Gaal.

1) Luis Suarez – Barcelona (Previously Liverpool)

It’s no surprised to see the Uruguayan out in front. Suarez was head and shoulders above any footballer in the Premier League last season, winning the Player of the Year award as a result. During the summer, he bit Goirgio Chiellini during the World Cup, which led to a subsequent four month ban from football. He then completed a £75m transfer to Barcelona, and made his debut against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu!
