Manuel Pellegrini’s men enjoyed a stunning turnaround with many believing it impossible for the English side to progress any further into the competition.

But how does City’s win compare with that of other English sides wins in Italy?

Roma 0-2 Manchester City (December 2014)

Despite just two points their from first four games City completed a miraculous recovery during their last two Champions League group games that culminated in an impressive 2-0 win at the Stadio Olimpico.

City looked dead and buried when Bayern Munich were 2-1 up at the Etihad in their fifth group game but an inspired hat-trick from Sergio Aguero set City up for a final game showdown.

There were numerous permutations going into the match but City knew that a win would aid their qualification charge. They weathered an early Roma storm before Nasri and Zabaleta secured their place in the last 16.

AC Milan 0-1 Tottenham (February 2011)

Peter Crouch was able to give Harry Redknapp’s side a valuable goal in the first leg of their last 16 tie with AC Milan – Spurs went on to draw 0-0 in London to confirm their place in the quarterfinals.

However, the match is probably best remembered for what happened during it; Mathieu Flamini almost taking Vedran Corluka’s leg off with a wild tackle, and after it; Eddie Jordan and Gennaro Gattuso squaring up culminating in the Italian putting his hands around Jordan’s throat.

Inter Milan 4-3 Tottenham (October 2010)

Spurs found themselves 4-0 down at halftime and every bit of the Champions League novices they were in their group stage match against Inter at the San Siro.

However, a second half hat-trick from Gareth Bale brought the North London side at least some modicum of respect but it was the first time Bale’s abilities were on show and the night the Welshman announced himself to the rest of Europe.

Roma 0-2 Manchester United (April 2008)

Goals from Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo sent United on their way to the Champions League semi-final with a 2-0 win in the Stadio Olimpico. United would also win the return leg.

The Red Devils went on to lift the cup with a penalty shootout win over Chelsea in the final.

Inter Milan 0-1 Liverpool (March 2008)

Fernando Torres scored to make it 3-0 on aggregate against Inter and complete a clean sweep of English sides making it into the Champions League quarterfinals.

AC Milan 0-2 Arsenal (March 2008)

Arsenal became the first English side ever to beat AC Milan at the San Siro, with a late wonder strike from Cesc Fabregas and quick, counter attacking finish from Emmanuel Adebayor sealing the Gunners win.

Juventus 0-0 Arsenal (April 2006)

After a 2-0 win at Highbury, which saw a young Cesc Fabregas show why it was the right decision from Arsene Wenger to flog Patrick Vieira to Juventus, a solid defensive display from Arsenal secured a 0-0 draw on in Turin.

An even more miraculous feat when you consider their back-line consisted of Emmanuel Eboue, Kolo Toure, Philippe Senderos and at left back Mathieu Flamini.

Juventus 0-0 Liverpool (April 2005)

Rafa Benitez’s unfancied Liverpool side produced a disciplined performance to hold on against Juventus and protect their 2-1 lead from the first leg at Anfield.

Liverpool went on to beat Chelsea in the semi-final and overturn a 3-0 deficit in the Champions League final to become European Champions for the fifth time.

Inter Milan 1-5 Arsenal (November 2003)

The Gunners’ very own Italian Job. Arsenal knew going to Milan that anything other than a victory would see them eliminated from the Champions League group stage.

They may have lost 3-0 at Highbury but Arsene Wenger’s side turned on the style in the San Siro with Thierry Henry, Edu, Pires and Ljungberg all on the score sheet.

Juventus 2-3 Manchester United (April 1999)

2-0 down after 11 minutes against the Italian giants and it looked a tall order for United to progress past the semi-finals but quick-fire goals from Andy Cole and Roy Keane put Sir Alex Ferguson’s side back on level pegging and ahead on away goals in the tie.

Cole then scored a stunning winner to confirm United’s place in their European Cup final, their first in 31 years and set them on their way to a historic treble.
