Tottenham Hotspur Player Ratings From Europa League Defeat To Besiktas: Dembele Impressive But Soldado Misfiring

How did the Spurs players fare as they lost out on top spot in their group?

Tottenham Hotspur could draw the likes of Borussia Monchengladbach, Zenit St. Petersburg and Dinamo Moscow in the next round of the Europa League after failing to get the point that they needed in their final group stage clash against Slaven Bilic’s useful Besiktas side in Istanbul.

In a game disrupted by a first half floodlight failure, Spurs dominated early on but lost their grip in the second half, losing out to a scrappy winning goal by Turkish international Tosun.

This is how we rated the Spurs side:

GK) Michel Vorm 6 – Given a run out ahead of regular first choice Hugo Lloris, Vorm did fine with the little action that he had – he was given no chance with the goal.

RB) Kyle Walker 7 – Walker impressed on his return to the Spurs team after a length injury layoff, looking sprightly during his marauding runs down the right flank.

CB) Younes Kaboul 5 – The Spurs captain was largely solid, but Besiktas hit the bar through a clear error by the Frenchman and his positioning for the goal could be questioned.

CB) Vlad Chiriches 6 – The Romanian was more impressive than his central defensive partner but always looks to have a mistake in him.

LB) Danny Rose 6 – Had one or two useful runs into the attacking third but could be criticised for failing to track back defensively.

CM) Benjamin Stambouli 7 – Quietly impressive and efficient in central midfield for Spurs, he kept the ball well and broke up play.

CM) Paulinho 5 – Forever underwhelming, Paulinho had little effect on the match before he was hauled off by Mauricio Pochettino.

ACM) Moussa Dembele 8 – Was Spurs’ best player during the first hour until he tired later on – drove forward with purpose and picked out some fine passes.

ARM) Andros Townsend 6 – The England winger had one or two neat touches and good passes but was also wasteful on occasions.

ALM) Nacer Chadli 7 – Belgian international Chadli looks a different player this season – he was Spurs’ biggest goal threat throughout.

SC) Roberto Soldado 5 – As ever, the Spanish international worked hard and got into some good positions but he is clearly lacking confidence and his finishing was woeful.

SUB) Erik Lamela 5 – Came on for Soldado and was asked to bring creativity, but it never really happened for the Argentina.

SUB) Aaron Lennon 5 – Struggled to get into the game as a late substitute for Paulinho.

SUB) Etiene Capoue 5 – Didn’t do anything wrong as such, but the defensive midfielder was an odd player for Pochettino to bring on.

MAN) Mauricio Pochettino 4 – Made the decision to rest players and it cost his side top spot, whilst Spurs’ substitutions were also borderline bizarre.
