United looking at young central defender Jose Gimenez.
Manchester United are set to step on the toes of their bitter city rivals Manchester City if reports from the Express are to be believed, with the Red Devils set to move in to the battle for young Atletico Madrid centre back Jose Gimenez after their rivals had a £17 million offer rejected.
Gimenez has only made a handful of first team starts for Atletico under their highly rated manager Diego Simeone and was very much on the fringes of the side as they sensationally won La Liga last season, but he is seen as a huge potential star of the future and is already a regular for the Uruguayan national side.
The report suggests that Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini is a huge fan of Jimenez and was hoping to steal a march on his rivals with a straight £17 million offer for the player – only for Atletico to turn the bid down out of hand.
This could leave the room for United to move into the equation and look to make a move for Gimenez as Louis van Gaal looks to strengthen a back line that has been regularly criticised this season, although the fee required for such an inexperienced player is an astronomical one.
