The former Chelsea midfielder, who is owned by MLS franchise New York City, has regularly impressed for the Premier League champions so far this season, and could be enticed into one final hurrah in a major European division.

If Lampard continues to succeed at the Etihad Stadium, he could even join the ranks of these ten world class players, who have all enjoyed major success at more than one club. Although, he will have to go some to match the exploits of these current stars of the game:

10) Gareth Bale (Tottenham Hotspur / Real Madrid)

The FWA Footballer of the Year and PFA Players’ Player of the Year during his final year at Tottenham, the world’s most expensive player has since flourished in Madrid, winning the Champions League and the Copa del Rey.

9) Thierry Henry (Arsenal / Barcelona)

The soon to be retired French star was arguably Arsenal’s greatest ever player, scoring 226 goals to fire the Gunners to two Premier League titles and three FA Cup’s. He would win seven more trophies at Barcelona, including the Champions League.

8) Samuel Eto’o (Barcelona / Inter Milan)

A two-time Champions League winner with Barcelona, the Cameroon striker also fired Inter Milan to European glory in 2010 as part of a historic treble. He’s impressed at Chelsea and Everton in recent years, without adding to his trophy collection.

7) Arjen Robben (Chelsea / Real Madrid / Bayern Munich)

Has won domestic titles at Chelsea, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, but had to wait until 2013 to end his long-standing Champions League drought, scoring the winning goal against German rivals Borussia Dortmund in the final.

6) Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Inter Milan / Barcelona / AC Milan / PSG)

Began a successful career at Ajax, and then Juventus before winning back-to-back titles with Inter Milan. Made it five consecutive domestic titles with wins at Barcelona and AC Milan (seven if you include the Juventus victories that were revoked), before adding to his haul in Paris.

5) Carlos Tevez (Manchester United / Manchester City / Juventus)

Helped fire Man United to back-to-back Premier League titles and the Champions League, before helping neighbours City win their maiden Premier League trophy and the FA Cup. Has continued to impress in Italy in recent times.

4) Ashley Cole (Arsenal / Chelsea)

Became part of the historic Arsenal invincible’s before moving to Chelsea in controversial circumstances in 2006. Won the Premier League again at Stamford Bridge, as well as the Champions League, Europa League and FA Cup.

3) Xabi Alonso (Liverpool / Real Madrid / Bayern Munich)

Won the Champions League with Liverpool, Real Madrid and will now be hoping to do the same with Bayern Munich. Has also won three domestic cups and two European Super Cups, as well as La Liga.

2) Andrea Pirlo (AC Milan / Juventus)

Won the Champions League twice with AC Milan before reinventing himself at Juventus, winning three consecutive Serie A titles and defying his age with consistently impressive performances.

1) Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United / Real Madrid)

Won nine major honours at Manchester United before moving to Madrid and establishing himself as one of the greatest players of all time. At last count, he has scored 407 career goals in 592 games, with 284 in 269 for Real.
