Arsenal and Manchester United fans are set reignite old rivalries, but this time over how much their former players are getting paid by Sky Sports.

Gunners legend Thierry Henry retired from professional football this week following 20 years in the game and took up a position as pundit and ambassador at Sky Sports – a role where he is expected to fetch up to £24 million over a six year contract.

Former United defender Gary Neville is thought to be on around  just £1.2m a season – which is dwarfed by Henry’s mega £4m annual contract.

The Arsenal icon will become the best paid pundit in English football when he joins Sky next season, but will still be allowed to work for the BBC during major tournaments, as he did during this year’s Brazil World Cup – though is banned from any work with Sky’s biggest rivals BT Sport.

The Frenchman has shelved his coaching ambitions for the time being as it was thought he may look to take up a post at his former club Arsenal with an eye for a managerial role. However, his contract will still allow him to train for his UEFA coaching badges so the door is open in the future.

“It feels like a logical step. It gives me the possibility to stay close to the game and help people understand it better,” said Henry to Daily Mail on his new career move.
