The recent improved form of Iker Casillas – who has saved two penalties in the past week – is thought to have turned Los Blancos away from the idea of signing the 24-year-old. At only 33-years-old, Casillas should still have a number of years left at the top level, and Madrid also signed World Cup star Keylor Navas to offer competition.

All this means that De Gea looks likely to stay at Old Trafford for the foreseeable future, with his agent Jorge Mendes having failed to force through a move. Manchester United will be eager for their star custodian to put pen to paper, as he has been one of the major reasons for the team’s rise to third in the Premier League.
