Reports in the Daily Express claim that Real Madrid are prepared to break the goalkeeping transfer record to sign the 24-year-old Spaniard, for a fee eclipsing the £33m Juventus paid for Gianluigi Buffon in 2001.

De Gea would subsequently fly to the top of the following list, which shows the top ten most expensive keepers of all time:

10) Craig Gordon (Hearts to Sunderland, £9m)

Struggled desperately with injuries during his time in England, making just 88 league appearances between 2007 and 2012 before taking a two-year break from the game. Joined Celtic this summer.

9) Simon Mignolet (Sunderland to Liverpool, £9m)

The Belgian has endured mixed fortunes during his time at Anfield, coming close to the Premier League title last season, before more recently being dropped in favour of Australian stopper Brad Jones.

8) Samir Handanovic (Udinese to Inter Milan, £9m)

The Slovenian international joined Inter Milan in 2012, and has become one of the team’s most consistent and reliable players during a difficult transitional period for Italian football.

7) Fernando Muslera (Lazio to Galatasaray, £9.93m)

Best known for being Uruguay’s World Cup goalkeeper in both 2010 and 2014, the former Lazio man completed his surprise move to Turkey in 2011, and has since made 114 appearances, scoring once.

6) Fraser Forster (Celtic to Southampton, £10m)

The England international joined the Saints this summer, and contributed towards their excellent start to the season. The former Newcastle academy player spent four years with Celtic.

5) Jan Oblak (Benfica to Atletico Madrid, £12.6m)

The 21-year-old made 16 first-team appearances for Benfica before being snapped up by the Spanish champions this summer. The Slovenian is yet to make a La Liga appearance.

4) Angelo Peruzzi (Inter Milan to Lazio, £15.7m)

Made 31 appearances for the Italian national team despite playing second fiddle to Buffon, and was part of the squad that won in 2006. Made over 200 appearances for Juventus before finishing his career with Lazio.

3) David de Gea (Atletico Madrid to Manchester United, £18m)

The Spaniard attracted plenty of criticism when he first joined United in 2011, but the 24-year-old has since developed into one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League.

2) Manuel Neuer (Schalke to Bayern Munich, £19m)

Renowned as the best keeper in the world and one of the final three for this year’s Ballon d’Or. The German World Cup winning stopper has proved himself the ultimate sweeper keeper time and again.

1) Gianluigi Buffon (Parma to Juventus, £33m)

The Italian World Cup winner and Juventus veteran has been one of the best keepers around for well over a decade, and still has a few more years left in him yet by the looks of things.
