Sterling’s current deal at Anfield expires in 2017 and the Reds have been working tirelessly to try and prepare an offer that appeases the 20-year-old and his representatives.

It’s said that an initial offer of £70,000-a-week plus healthy incentives was rejected by the England international and now Gerrard has entered the debate and is trying to convince the youngster to sign.

“I hope he signs a new contract at the club because I think this club is perfect for him, certainly for the next few years,” the 34-year-old was quoted by the Telegraph.

“He’s going to play most weeks, the fans love him here. He can progress here and become a top, top player here so I hope the people around him give him the right advice because he should stay here.”

Sterling really showed his class and potential for the Merseysiders last season as he played a big part in the team that eventually finished second in the Premier League.

Initially breaking through as a winger the Englishman has shown he is equally adept as a striker or as a No.10 at the tip of a diamond midfield.
