The England midfielder’s Villa Park contract expires next summer and Brendan Rodgers apparently sees the 25 year old as a potential successor to Anfield veteran Steven Gerrard.

Though traditionally Gerrard has been associated with an attacking midfield role over the past 18 months the 34 year old has been chiefly operating in a more withdrawn role which is perhaps closer to that which Delph operates in in Paul Lambert’s side.

Aston Villa are likely to fend off advances for Delph in January in the hope that they can tie down the former Leeds United man to a new deal.

However Delph’s recent call-up to Roy Hodgson’s national team set-up may well lead to a belief he should seek a high-profile move at this stage of his career.
