Ten Strikers Liverpool Can Target In January Transfer Window To Meet Pundit’s Demands

Liverpool have struggled for goals in all competitions so far this season…

Liverpool scored over 100 Premier League goals last season, but it’s been a completely different story so far this season. They’ve netted just 19 times in 16 games, while Steven Gerrard and Raheem Sterling are joint top scorers with three.

Summer signings Mario Balotelli and Rickie Lambert have netted just four goals between them, only two of which have come in the league, while returning loanee Fabio Borini has yet to register.

Speaking about former AC Milan and Manchester City man Balotelli, BBC Sport pundit Robbie Savage said: “[Brendan] Rodgers gambled when he signed him and it has not paid off. I would sell him in January to raise some funds and try to buy two more centre-forwards.”

But who is available for the Liverpool boss? Here are ten candidates he could look to sign in the January transfer window:

10) Fernando Torres (Chelsea / AC Milan)

AC Milan have been forced to play down reports linking their on loan striker with a famous return to Anfield. The Spanish striker scored 81 goals in 142 games for the Reds, but has struggled since leaving for Chelsea in 2011, and has faired little better since his switch to Italy.

9) Diafra Sakho (West Ham United)

Sakho made an incredible start to life in English football, and has scored eight goals in his first 11 games for West Ham. That has led to reports linking him with a move to Liverpool, although an improved contract at Upton Park seems more likely.

8) Karim Benzema (Real Madrid)

Recent reports have linked Liverpool with an unlikely £50m move for the French star. The 27-year-old has scored 125 goals in 258 games for the Spanish side, and has been an integral part of their record winning run, with 14 already this season.

7) Saido Berahino (West Bromwich Albion)

The young striker has scored eight times this season, but has not found the net since mid-October, with rumours of his impending move away from West Brom being dampened as a result. However, he remains an outstanding prospect, and one any Premier League side would like to have at the right price.

6) Jackson Martinez (FC Porto)

The Colombian’s goal record is unquestionable, and he’s netted 16 in 19 games already this season. However, at 28, he’s already in the midst of his peak years, and might not have the pace or movement to appeal to Brendan Rodgers, despite the contradictory reports.

5) Edinson Cavani (Paris Saint Germain)

Like Benzema, a hopeful inclusion on this list, but nonetheless one that has been linked with Liverpool on numerous occasions throughout the second-half of 2014. The 27-year-old has scored 13 goals for the French giants so far this season.

4) Wilfried Bony (Swansea City)

Liverpool were linked with the Swansea striker in the summer, but a move never emerged. But after another eight goals this season, including four in his last five games, the Ivorian is once again attracting interest from Anfield.

3) Paulo Dybala (Palermo)

A name for the future – the 21-year-old Argentine has scored seven goals this season, including five in his last six games. Comparisons have been made between Dybala and his countryman Sergio Aguero, and Liverpool would seemingly love to recruit him.

2) Gonzalo Higuain (Napoli)

The Argentine World Cup star has scored nine goals in all competitions this season, although he hasn’t found the net since November, when he enjoyed a run of seven goals in six matches. Reports claim he’s unhappy, and could be open to a move.

1) Alexandre Lacazette (Lyon)

The talented youngster has scored 17 goals in 19 games this season, including six in his last four. The 23-year-old made his debut for the French national team last year, although Lyon are prepared to fight hard to keep him out of Liverpool’s clutches, according to reports.
