What has been clear from almost directly after the summer transfer window ended is that the Red Devils need defenders, with them being short at the back for most of the season so far.

Michael Carrick, as well as youth prospects Paddy McNair and Tyler Blackett have had to play at centre-back so far although this has not been helped by the injuries that the squad has suffered.

Here are the positions that they need strengthening and who they should sign to do so…

CB) Mats Hummels

The 2014 World Cup winner would be perfect to lead the Red Devils’ back line, and has been linked to the club repeatedly over the last 12 months.

United have been short at the back ever since Patrice Evra, Rio Ferdinand, and Nemanja Vidic all left the club in the summer.

Currently part of a massively underperforming Borussia Dortmund side, the German may be keen on getting out of the club in the January window. If he did leave, then it would be to United’s massive gain.

CM) Kevin Strootman

With so many attacking players in their midfield manager Louis van Gaal could do with adding a more defensively minded player in to the mix.

AS Roma’s Kevin Strootman would be ideal, as not only could he add defensive solidity but he can also contribute to the attacking side of the game.

With his current club already out of the Champions League, apparently his transfer could be moved forward in to January as the Mancunian club look to strengthen.

CDM) Sergio Busquets

Now this one may seem more outlandish, but if the midfielder is on the market then the Red Devils should move very quickly. According to the Mirror he is, and United are keen.

The Spaniard would be the perfect player to allow the team’s attacking players to flourish, exactly like he has done at FC Barcelona for years now. Whether or not it is actually feasible is another matter, but if it is he would be an amazing signing.
