Purely Football recently put together a top ten, and here it is again for you to remind yourself of:

10) Arsene Wenger “Persie-ing”

The Arsenal manager emulated his former player’s World Cup effort during his time in Brazil, where he worked as a pundit for French television. Not sure how well it went down in a game of beach volleyball.

9) James and the Giant Grasshopper

Shortly after converting a potentially match saving penalty for Colombia against Brazil, James Rodriguez was attacked by – of all things – a giant grasshopper, which has actually landed as he took the successful spot kick.

8) Brendan Rodgers’ Champions League comments

The Liverpool boss was optimistic of signing some of the world’s best talent after securing a return to Europe, claiming that Manchester United would find it much harder after missing out. That didn’t work out all that well…

7) Neymar’s celebration slip

Neymar infamously missed Brazil’s World Cup semi-final against Germany through a back injury – but he could have been sidelined sooner than he was. Has he rushed to celebrate Thiago Silva’s goal against Colombia, he went for a tumble.

6) Assistant referee plays it cool

There is nothing like offering your hand out for a handshake or a high-five only to be rejected. But this Canadian linesman was quick to react, live on television screens around the world he did this to avoid the accidental snub.

5) Thomas Muller’s free kick trip

The German’s are well known as master tacticians but the jury’s still out on whether or not this free kick routine was on purpose or not. As Schweinsteiger began his dummying run over the ball Thomas Muller slipped and fell on it.

4) Vergini’s own goal against Southampton

Arguably one of the best own goals the Premier League has ever seen. Sunderland suffered their biggest defeat in 32 years as Southampton run in eight on the South Coast, and this was arguably the best of the lot.

3) Sabella’s fake fainting gone wrong

As Gonzalo Higuain struck the cross bar in Argentina’s World Cup quarter-final with Belgium, his manager Alejandro Sabella gave everybody the impression that he was about to faint, only for him to be caught by his assistant.

2) Adrian Chiles and the ITV splashed by the pitch sprinklers

In the build up to England’s Euro 2016 qualifier with Switzerland Adrian Chiles, Lee Dixon, Ian Wright and Glenn Hoddle were left drenched by a pesky sprinkler. An advert break was required as ITV hastily attempted to clear up the mess.

1) Gerrard’s slip

Not one for Liverpool fans this, but even they can perhaps appreciate the irony behind this one. As Liverpool beat title rivals Man City 3-2 at Anfield, captain Steven Gerrard huddled up his players and told them that “this does not ******** slip now!”. Two weeks later against Chelsea, he did just that.
