Player ratings for Manchester United vs Newcastle United:

GK) David de Gea – 7.0

Could do nothing to stop an inch perfect penalty, but made a couple of excellent saves throughout the match.

CB) Paddy McNair – 7.5

A surprisingly superb performance from the youngster, who was easily the best of the three centre-backs.

CB) Jonny Evans – 6.5

A solid performance from Evans, who was largely untroubled for the majority of the game.

CB) Phil Jones – 6.0

A decent performance from Jones until his crazy decision to stick a leg out and take down Jack Colback in the box.

RWB) Antonio Valencia – 7.0

His strength and pace caused plenty of problems for Newcastle down the flank.

CM) Michael Carrick – 7.5

A calm and composed performance from the experienced midfielder, setting the tempo for the rest of his team.

CM) Wayne Rooney – 8.5

A pair of goals for the captain, and a fantastic performance from central midfield. He even turned provider for Robin van Persie’s goal.

LWB) Ashley Young – 8.0

Was a real threat from the left side, and put in plenty of quality crosses for Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao. He looks to have found his perfect position in Louis van Gaal’s side.

CAM) Juan Mata – 8.0

Really pulled the strings from behind the strikers, and was instrumental in both the first two goals.

ST) Robin van Persie – 7.0

Was largely anonymous for large parts of the game, but showed why he is on the pitch with a well taken headed goal in the second half.

ST) Radamel Falcao – 7.5

A superb hour on the pitch for the Colombian, unselfishly put it on a plate for Wayne Rooney to score his first.

Substitute) Darren Fletcher – 5.5

Man United looked far more vulnerable when Fletcher replaced Carrick.

Substitute) James Wilson – 6.0

Didn’t have a huge impact on the game, but looked lively when he came on.

Substitute) Rafael – N/A

A cameo performance for the right-back.
