Gunners fans have been crying out for their boss to land a defensive midfielder and it appears that Sporting Lisbon enforcer William Carvalho is the man on Wenger’s wish–list with a £20m bid on the cards.

Sporting Lisbon has previously placed a far higher price-tag on the 22 year old Portuguese international but it appears they have reduced their valuation and a January move may well be just the type of addition Wenger needs as he battle for a top four finish.

Carvalho is a far more suitable option to provide some steel in the centre of the park than Frenchman Mathieu Flamini and Spanish veteran Mikel Arteta.

Wenger will also look to strengthen his central defensive options with a £4m bid for West Ham man Winston Reid with the New Zealand international seemingly set for an Upton Park exit.

The 26 year old has been in superb form this term but is yet to pen a new Hammers deal and with his current contract set to expire next summer there is a chance that the East London side will consider ‘cut-price’ offers for the defender in preference to see the player leave on a free transfer at the end of the season.

Per Mertesacker has been poor this term and the sale of Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona has left Wenger short of options and has led to both Nacho Monreal and Mathieu Debuchy at times having to fill in as make-shift central defenders with varying degrees of success.
