It had been thought that the Gunners had already got the deal all but sewn up with a £1.6 million offer. However it now seems that they will face some competition for his signature.

The Serie A side have apparently asked their director of football Walter Sabatini to swoop in and take the young midfielder from under the nose of Arsene Wenger.

The North London club remain in pole position to sign the Legia Warsaw man, but will have it tougher than they originally expected. They will need to move quickly if they want to ward of rival interest in the player who has been described as the “next Patrick Vieira”.

Wenger is looking to the future with this potential signing, but he may need to get some players who are able to make an immediate impact if he wants to finish somewhere higher than his customary fourth position in the Premier League.
