The centre-back was key to Atleti’s surprise win of La Liga.

CB) Javier Mascherano, Barcelona

Mascherano may not have originally been a central defender, but he has performed admirably there for the Catalan club. When restored to his proper position in the World Cup he excelled.

CM) Angel Di Maria, Real Madrid/Manchester United

Signed by the Red Devils for £59.7 million in the summer, his form throughout the calendar year has shown that he is well worth it.

CM) Yacine Brahimi, Granada/Porto

The Algerian had a solid season in Spain before impressing the World Cup. He has carried on impressing at new club Porto in the current campaign.

CM) Toni Kroos, Bayern Munich/Real Madrid

The centre-mid was part of a Bayern Munich side that won the Bundesliga with seven matches to go, and then won the World Cup before becoming a key part of an amazing Real Madrid side. Not a bad year.

LW) Cristiano Ronaldo, Real Madrid

Yet another amazing year for the Portuguese, and he has already managed an amazing 25 goals this season.

RW) Lionel Messi, Barcelona

Not the four time Ballon d’Or winner’s best year, but he is still potentially the best player in world football and an all time great.

ST) Luis Suarez, Liverpool/Barcelona

The Uruguayan managed to win the European golden boot while at Liverpool, and was in good form before his biting incident at the World Cup. He has found it a bit harder at the Catalan club, but should return to his best soon.
