Steven Gerrard made his decision to leave Liverpool when it was made clear to him that he would no longer be a key part of Brendan Rodgers’ first team plans according to the BBC.

The 34 year old will bring an end to his 26 year association with Liverpool next summer when he moved to the MLS, a decision that followed a conversation he had with Rodgers.
“The key conversation was when the manager sat me down and said it was time to manage my games,” the Anfield captain told the Liverpool FC website.
“It was a very difficult conversation to have. I’m bright enough to realise it is the right thing. I accept it.”
“When you’ve been a starter and a mainstay in the team for such a long time… I had an idea the conversation was going to come at some time, but it was a painful conversation.”
Steven Gerrard is into his 17th season in the Liverpool first team set-up and has amassed a total of 695 appearances and scored 180 goals in the process but isn’t finshed yet.
“These next six months are a very important period for myself and the team,” he said.
“I’d love to leave this team with a top-four finish.”
