GK: Pepe Reina

Reina may not have been with the club during their Champions League triumph, but his overall contribution to the club just about outweighs that of Jerzy Dudek. His only other serious competitor is David James, but the Spaniard was Gerrard’s teammate at Anfield for much longer.

RB: Jamie Carragher

Carragher spent a lot of his early career in the right-back slot, coming through the ranks to replace the often injured Rob Jones. As he got older he was shifted into the middle on a more regular basis, but Liverpool’s problems in the right-back slot have meant the former England international will have to fill in there.

CB: Stéphane Henchoz

The powerful Swiss star spent six happy years at Liverpool when he was snapped up from Blackburn Rovers. Popular and inspirational during his time in a red shirt, he is still regarded as something of a cult hero but saw his spell at Anfield blighted by a series of injury problems.

CB: Sami Hyypia

The Fin was a virtual unknown when he signed for the club back in 1999, but ten years later he’d been elevated to hero status. Collecting ten trophies along the way, he is one of the club’s most decorated players of the club’s modern era alongside Gerrard and Carragher.

LB: John Arne Riise

Risse clocked up over 300 appearances for the club during an eight-year spell at the club. Over that time he went from being a precocious youngster with a howitzer of a left foot to a dependable performer that was strong at both ends of the field.
