The Argentine came off the bench and scored in the team’s 2-0 victory against Yeovil Town in the FA Cup third round on Sunday. Before his entrance United had been looking sluggish, and took an hour to score their first goal against the relative minnows.
Old Trafford stalwart Fletcher has been impressed by what he has seen from the £59.7 million record signing, and hopes that he is able to continue it over the whole of the campaign. If he is able to do so, then the Scot believes that the 26-year-old will be a key player for Louis van Gaal’s side.
He told MUTV: “It was a touch of class to dink it over the goalkeeper, a fantastic goal, so credit to him. He showed exactly what he’s all about. He’s learning quickly and he makes great, intelligent runs as well.
“He always wants the ball, he gets kicked and he just keeps getting up – he’s that strong. We have missed him but hopefully he’s back now and he can kick on for the second half of the season and be the really important player we know he’s going to be,” the 30-year-old added.
Di Maria had been out with an injury since October before his return. The squad has been decimated by fitness problems this season, with Rafael and Luke Shaw the latest to have picked up knocks.
