The Daily Mail have put together an article picking out the 15 highest scorers of all time across Europe’s top five leagues – Bundesliga, La Liga, Ligue 1, Premier League and Serie A.

This only includes league goals and makes for some interesting reading.

14=. Nat Lofthouse, 1946 to 1960

Club: Bolton Wanderers.

Goals: 255.

A true club legend at Bolton, Lofthouse never played for any other side and also bagged an impressive 30 goals in just 33 caps for England as well.

14=. Bernard Lacombe, 1969 to 1987

Clubs: Lyon, Saint-Etienne, Bordeaux.

Goals: 255.

Enjoyed successful spells with Lyon and Bordeaux, winning three league titles with the latter in the 1980s and also won the European Championship with France in 1984.

13. Raul, 1994 to 2012

Clubs: Real Madrid, Schalke 04.

Goals: 256.

A legend at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu the striker enjoyed a huge amount of success with Los Blancos before a brief spell in Germany.

11=. Lionel Messi, 2004 to present

Club: FC Barcelona.

Goals: 257.

At 27-years-old there is every chance Messi will work his way a lot higher up this list and in many peoples’ eyes the Argentine is among the best players ever.

11=. Charlie Buchan, 1911 to 1927

Clubs: Sunderland, Arsenal.

Goals: 257.

Started his career with the Gunners, but left for Wearside over pay dispute before he returned later in his career and Buchan could have scored so much more had the First World War not taken place.

10. Klaus Fischer, 1968 to 1988

Clubs: 1860 Munich, Schalke 04, Cologne, Bochum.

Goals: 268.

A regular for club and country during a varied career in his home nation and was a World Cup runner-up in 1982 with West Germany.

9. Silvio Piola, 1930 to 1954

Clubs: Vercelli, Lazio, Torino, Juventus, Novara.

Goals: 274.

A record breaker in Italy, Piola is the record goalscorer for three clubs, the highest scorer in the history of the Italian top flight and the Azzurri’s third highest scorer despite only having 34 caps.

8. Alan Shearer, 1988 to 2004

Clubs: Southampton, Blackburn Rovers, Newcastle United.

Goals: 283.

Remains the topscorer in Premier League history with an almost unassailable 260 strikes and was also prolific for England.

6=. Cristiano Ronaldo, 2003 to present

Clubs: Manchester United, Real Madrid.

Goals: 287.

Was brilliant at Old Trafford, but since moving to the Spanish capital in 2009 for a then world record £80m the Portugal captain has almost unstoppable.

6=. Gordon Hodgson, 1926 to 1939

Clubs: Liverpool, Aston Villa, Leeds United.

Goals: 287.

South African by birth Hodgson would go onto play for the Three Lions, as well as playing first class cricket for Lancashire.

5. Delio Onis, 1971 to 1986

Clubs: Stade Reims, AS Monaco, Tours FC, SC Toulon.

Goals: 299.

Although had duel citizenship with Argentina and Italy, it was in France that Onis made his name and finished just one shy of 300 league efforts.

4. Dixie Dean, 1924 to 1938

Club: Everton.

Goals: 310.

A real legend at Goodison Park Dean was a goal machine of the highest order and a statue of the great striker stands outside the Toffees’ ground.

3. Steve Bloomer, 1892 to 1914

Clubs: Derby County, Middlesbrough.

Goals: 317.

Played at the Riverside for four years, but it was with his two spells with Derby that Bloomer really came into his own.

2. Gerd Muller, 1965 to 1979

Club: Bayern Munich.

Goals: 365.

A truly prolific striker who as well as doing so much for Bayern also scored an amazing 68 goals in just 62 games for West Germany.

1. Jimmy Greaves, 1957 to 1971

Clubs: Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, AC Milan, West Ham United.

Goals: 366.

Top of the pile is Spurs’ highest ever scorer and one of the best forwards in English history.
