Lampard, who is currently on loan at Manchester City, will be back in New York come the end of the Premier League season, ready to re-start the battle. But where do the pair rank in the Premier League’s ten best exports that have reached the MLS?

Here’s our list in full:

10) Jermain Defoe

Joined Toronto from Tottenham in early 2014, and despite 11 goals in 19 appearances, as endured a miserable time off the field, and is seemingly eager for a return to England in the current transfer window.

9) Brian McBride

Became something of a cult figure for Fulham, scoring 33 goals in 140 league games between 2004 and 2008. He eventually returned to the US with Chicago Fire, scoring 18 times in 59 appearances.

8) Nigel Reo-Coker

Once expected to become the next big England midfield star, having become the youngest captain of an FA Cup finalist when he led out West Ham in 2006. But he ended up in Vancouver in 2013, and is now with Montreal Impact.

7) Clint Dempsey

An iconic figure at Fulham, leading Roy Hodgson’s side to the Europa League final before departing for Tottenham in 2012. Now with the Seattle Sounders, for whom he’s scored 15 times in 32 games thus far.

6) Freddie Ljungberg

The former Arsenal winger enjoyed brief spells with both the Seattle Sounders and Chicago Fire after leaving the Premier League in 2008. Now with Mumbai City in the Indian Super League.

5) Robbie Keane

The former Tottenham and Liverpool man has been a huge hit in the States, bagging 53 goals in 84 games for LA Galaxy, while continuing to score for fun on the international stage. Gone too soon perhaps?

4) Thierry Henry

After winning the Champions League with Barcelona, the Arsenal legend joined the New York Red Bulls. The Frenchman struck 51 times in 122 games, and even enjoyed a brief loan spell back with the Gunners in 2012.

3) Frank Lampard

The iconic Chelsea midfielder joined New York City in the summer, with the club immediately loaning him to Manchester City. Lampard has proved a huge success at the Etihad, and now looks set to stay for the rest of the season.

2) Steven Gerrard

The Liverpool captain is set to end a 17 year stay with the Reds to join LA Galaxy at the end of the current season. The deal will see him become arguably the biggest name in the MLS, alongside Lampard.

1) David Beckham

The former Man United, Real Madrid and England star joined Galaxy in 2007, and stayed until 2012 when he joined PSG. He scored 18 goals in 98 games, winning two MLS Cups and twice being named the league’s best player.
