Here are the five ex-Blues stars who have been impressing the most this season.

5. Juan Mata, Manchester United

Initially struggled when he first made the then club record £37.1m switch to Old Trafford in January 2014, but since Louis van Gaal took charge as manager the Spain international has been revitalised.

With Angel di Maria injured Mata made the No.10 spot his own over the past few weeks and has a decent tally of five goals and three assists in 15 league starts this term.

4. Tiago, Atletico Madrid

Was something of a bit-part player during his time in West London, but the veteran proved his class last campaign by helping Atleti to their first La Liga title in 17 years.

Tiago may now be 33-years-old but he is still an important part of Diego Simeone’s squad and despite his age can still cut it at the very top.

3. David Luiz, Paris Saint-Germain

May have been roundly derided after his woeful performance for Brazil in the 7-1 semi-final drubbing by Germany at the 2014 World Cup, but that wasn’t a great representation of the defender.

Admittedly getting £40m from PSG for Luiz was a great piece of business by Jose Mourinho, but the 27-year-old has looked good alongside national captain Thiago Silva in Ligue 1.

2. Kevin de Bruyne, Wolfsburg

Much was expected of this Belgium international after he returned to West London in the summer of 2013 following 18 months away on-loan with Genk and then Werder Bremen.

Yet de Bruyne struggled for game time under Mourinho and was sold for £16m to the Bundesliga and has since been brilliant for Wolfsburg and among the best players in Europe this campaign.

1. Arjen Robben, Bayern Munich

Leading the pack though has to be a winger who appears to be improving with age and at 30-years-old is regarded by many as being among the best in world football.

Robben is arguably Bayern’s best player – although teammate Manuel Neuer is the one shortlisted for the Ballon d’Or – and is a real lynchpin for success for both the German champions and the Netherlands.
