Five Former Liverpool Stars Impressing This Season Including Premier League Duo And Barcelona Ace

Five former Reds who are shining away from Anfield this season…

It can be painful to see a player you once cheered for turning out for another side, made that much worse when the player in question is performing well. Liverpool have seen a number of stars exit the club in recent years, and with the team performing below expectations at the moment, they may be wishing they had a few of them back.

Here are five former Liverpool players who have been performing well this season:

5. Andy Carroll, West Ham United

The former Newcastle United man came in for a huge amount of criticism following his big money move to Liverpool, but while he is worth nowhere near £35m, he is still a quality striker.

With a team built to accommodate him, Carroll can really excel; something that has been evident this season at West Ham.

There are few who can match the powerful forward in the air, and his link up play has been absolutely superb so far.

4. Emile Heskey, Bolton Wanderers

Although he has barely played this season, Emile Heskey has surprised a number of people with his return to English football.

Having joined Bolton Wanderers in the Championship, the 36-year-old impressed hugely in his first game for the club; scoring shortly after coming on.

After going behind against Blackburn, Heskey’s strike ignited a comeback that saw them run out 2-1 winners.

3. Javier Mascherano, Barcelona

Having spent three years at Liverpool, the Argentine always looked likely to move on to bigger and better things.

He has been a rock at Barcelona since making the move there in 2010, and is in the midst of another fantastic season at the Nou Camp.

2. Xabi Alonso, Bayern Munich

The loss of Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid in 2009 was a big one for Liverpool, and the Spaniard has only improved since his Anfield exit.

One of the most experienced and effective midfielders in world football, the Bayern Munich man has been in exceptional form this season.

1. Stewart Downing, West Ham United

The England international never really looked like making the grade at Liverpool, and letting him go certainly seemed the right thing to do.

He appears to have a new lease on life at West Ham however, and has been one of the stand-out performers in the Premier League this season.
