Andy Townsend Among Worst Football Pundits: Which Former Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea And United Stars Have Us Pulling Our Hair Out?

It would be better to just mute the TV than suffer.

With the news everyone’s “favourite” ITV pundit Andy Townsend is set to leave his role as match colour commentator at the end of this season after the broadcaster lost the rights to the FA Cup, Europa and Champions League.

Perhaps not the worst out there but Townsend certainly wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea and joins a number of pundits as some of the more disliked voices in the game.

We round up the 10 most frustrating, tweet causing, blood boiling, sigh inducing footballing pundits.

Andy Townsend

As said, the ITV man is leaving his role at the broadcaster at the end of this season and is known for a number of cliches. His most famous probably being his undying support for Chelsea, regularly heard to be cheering “GET IN!” before the ball’s even hit the back of the net and his almost nationalistic support of English side’s in Europe and the England national side, despite being Northern Irish.

Tony Gale

The dour voice of Sky Sports News’ ‘The Morning View’ who has somehow managed to wrangle himself into the second tier of the broadcaster’s roster of pundits – come on, he’s never the same standard as the Monday Night Football crew or Soccer Saturday – whilst relentlessly repeating incorrect stereotypes.

Jamie Redknapp

Sorry Jamie. But you’re not a top, top, top, top pundit. At least not in our eyes. Redknapp is probably more useful as a Topman brochure than a serious opinion on the current issues in British football.

Dwight Yorke

Yorke only comes out of the woodwork for Manchester United matches but despite his lack of gigs throughout the year, the former striker still manages to frustrate and infuriate with his total lack of objectivity.

It’s okay to say United are occasionally bad Dwight.

Mark Lawrenson

The dictionary definition of grumpy old man.

Lawro’s humour and style are from a time gone by and he doesn’t particular care if you like him or not. Which you kind of have to respect, but you just have to hope he doesn’t keep coming out with things too controversial like his comments during the World Cup.

Phil Thompson

It probably seems unfair to have Liverpool’s cheerleader supreme on this list as it’s actually quite amusing when things go wrong for Liverpool or Thomo gets angry or even his fashion sense…yeah, why is he actually on this list?

Paul Merson

Merson gets a limited amount of rope as it can be quite hilarious when he mispronounces a name or forgets which teams are playing.

However, you can’t help but feel someone with something more substantive to say than “Oh he’s good.” could put in a better shift for Sky and actually improve our footballing understanding.

David Pleat

His wise, sage like drawl might be litterred with his typically astute tactical analysis but Pleat almost undermines his points when he continually gets player names wrong.

Robbie Savage

Savage’s punditry is so bad that even when he says something relatively reasonable you feel like throwing the TV out of the window.

It’d be better to watch with the mute button firmly pressed now.

He took it to new levels in BT Sport’s coverage of the FA Cup, questioning why non-league Dover couldn’t compete with Premier League club Crystal Palace.

I wonder why Robbie, maybe it’s the gargantuan difference in quality between the sides?

If there’s any TV or Radio producers reading this and thinking: “Well he’s clearly great because he promotes debate and people must like him because they voted for him that time on Strictly Come Dancing” No. Just, no.

Andy Gray

He might have been one of the best in the business behind the microphone during his glory years at Sky Sports, but Gray should be forever remembered for his ludicrous, ridiculous, sexist comments on referee Sian Massey who was ridiculed and laughed at by the Scotsman for the simple fact that she was a woman daring to officiate a men’s football match.

What a stand up guy.
