The 34-year-old has some big boots that will need filling, with the former England international being inspirational in all of the Merseyside club’s successes in the last decade. Here are six players who could be chosen to replace him.

Radja Nainggolan, AS Roma

Co-owned by Cagliari, the 26-year-old has been having a brilliant season as part of the Roma side that is challenging Juventus at the top of the Serie A, and so might take a massive bid in order to tempt away.

However, he would be worth it as he is similar to a younger Gerrard. A box to box midfielder who can be important at both ends of the pitch. He has been linked to the Reds by the Daily Star.

Fabian Delph, Aston Villa

Also linked by the Daily Star, the England international may not be a very inspirational signing. However, he would fill in a hole in midfield, while funds could be used to improve the team in other areas.

The 25-year-old can fill in a similar role to Gerrard, and is already a proven Premier League talent.

Miralem Pjanic, AS Roma

A top class creative midfielder and the second Roma player on this list, Pjanic would add more guile to central midfield for the Reds.

The Bosnian may not have the defensive qualities that the Liverpool legend has shown in his latter years, but he would more than make up for that with his forward play. He could apparently cost £23.5 million.

James Milner, Manchester City

The versatile midfielder has been rumoured to be leaving the Etihad Stadium with his contract finishing at the end of the season and the England international being in great form. He could fill a position in the middle of the pitch and has become more of a leader in recent months.

Although not quite up to Gerrard’s standards, similarly to Delph he would be cheap, allowing money to be spent elsewhere.

Morgan Schneiderlin, Southampton

The Frenchman is a key part of the Saints side that has surprised many this season, and has drawn interest from Liverpool as a result.

He would be great as a defensive midfielder for the Anfield based club, and may even help Dejan Lovren to play better, having played with the centre-back last season when he was displaying the form that earned him his move.

Jordan Henderson, Liverpool

The midfielder has been backed by the current captain to follow him in the role, and Brendan Rodgers has said that he will flourish out of the legend’s shadow for the Reds. So is the answer already at the club?

The 24-year-old may not bring the immediate lift that a new signing does, but that doesn’t mean that he isn’t the long term answer to the problem.
