The Serbian cost £20m from Benfica over the summer and has come in for some severe criticism since then, but this display showed just what the youngster is capable of.

However, he hasn’t been the most impressive player aged 21 or younger in the English top tier this season as shown by this statistical top 10 – stats courtesy of WhoScored.

10. Romelu Lukaku, Everton – 6.77 rating

Became the Toffees’ club record signing over the summer after making his switch from Chelsea permanent in a £28m deal, although six league goals to date is hardly groundbreaking.

9. Nabil Bentaleb, Tottenham Hotspur – 6.82

Broke into the Spurs first team under Tim Sherwood and Mauricio Pochettino shares his predecessor’s admiration of the 20-year-old, who keeps far more established names out of the starting XI.

8. Ayoze Perez, Newcastle United – 6.86

Emmanuel Riviere was signed as the star striker over the summer from AS Monaco, but the Frenchman has been a complete flop and this has given the unknown Perez a chance to sneak in and net five league goals to date.

7. Andrew Robertson, Hull City – 6.88

Unknown outside of Scottish football last season this 20-year-old is now established for both club and country and has looked good even though the Tigers are struggling.

6. Calum Chambers, Arsenal – 6.94

Signed from Southampton for £16m and has perhaps played more than expected due to injuries to the Gunners squad and the 19-year-old has stepped up with aplomb.

5. Eric Dier, Tottenham Hotspur – 6.98

Started life back in England with a bang after a £4m transfer from Sporting Lisbon with goals in his first two games from right-back, although things have gone a little quieter for the 20-year-old in recent times.

4. Ross Barkley, Everton – 7.05

Continues to prove his class after coming back from injury and Barkley has a goal and an assist for the Merseysiders as they struggle to recapture their form of last term.

3. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Arsenal – 7.12

An established figure in Arsene Wenger’s starting XI and the 21-year-old looks set to be an extremely important figure for both club and country in the coming years.

2. Harry Kane, Tottenham Hotspur – 7.16

It’s been a real breakthrough campaign for the 21-year-old striker who has seven league goals to date including an impressive brace against Chelsea in a 5-3 victory.

1. Raheem Sterling, Liverpool – 7.40

Top of the pile though is a 20-year-old who has recently been awarded the FIFA Golden Boy award for being the best young player in the world and has four league goals and four assists this season.
